Buddy Basics:
1. Students are number one: Everything we do must put students’ needs first. The mission of this organization is to help those who need it most. If we aren’t helping our students, we should stop.
2. Teaching is the hardest: There is no job harder than teaching. CWB’s knows that in order to solve the writing achievement gap, we must take work away from teachers, not give them more. Our organization should make teachers’ work easier. If we are not lightening teacher’s loads, then we may doing more harm than good.
3. Writing is everything: In every job, every major, every human interaction- communication is key. Our students must know how to write in order to have their voice heard. CWB’s should increase student confidence, ability level, and passion for writing. If students are not improving and loving writing more, we aren’t doing our job.
4. Know me, then my work: Feedback is most effective when it comes from a place of love. In order for our students to feel heard, and for our buddies to feel valued, building a human, in person relationship is key. If we aren’t fostering strong relationships between student and buddy, we aren’t accomplishing our mission.
5. Never stop pushing each other: Stagnation kills motivation. As a part of the CWB’s team, we must never stop bringing new ideas and critiques to the table. Good is the enemy of great. If we are not pushing each other to be great, we never will be.
Building Buddy Leadership:
College Writing Buddies believes that university students will be tomorrow's change makers. As a result, CWB relies heavily on student leadership to lead and drive the majority of operations and communications at each university. We believe that college students have the passion, skills, and creativity to take American education to the next level.
All College Writing Buddies are given the opportunity to apply for leadership positions at their university after completing their first semester. Next year, we will have over 15 student leaders working to make College Writing Buddies a success at Tulane University.
- 20 hour-semester commitment: Every College Writing Buddy commits to 20 hours of service a semester. Each buddy works with three students throughout the semester and provides two rounds of feedback on every paper.
- 10 in-person hours: Each buddy participates in a training day, one field trip to the students' school for "Meet Your Buddy Day", and one college tour trip where students come to spend an afternoon with their buddies on campus.
- 10 virtual hours: Buddies provide digital feedback to each of their three students on 8-10 writing assignments. With two rounds of feedback, each paper takes approximately one hour of coaching.
- Optional Hours: Throughout the semester buddies may choose to participate in a variety of optional activities to get to know their buddies more or provide more tutoring (tutoring nights, coming to class, after school writers workshops, etc.
